Visit the Voortrekker Monument

The monument should be on your things to do in Gauteng list. It is a beautiful Monument which commemorates the Pioneer history of Southern Africa and the history of the Afrikaner and is situated in a beautiful setting. The Monument was inaugurated in 1949. It was designed by architect Gerard Moerdijk.

The central focus of the monument is The Cenotaph, situated in the centre of the Cenotaph Hall. Through an opening in this dome a ray of sunlight shines at twelve o'clock on 16 December annually, falling onto the centre of the Cenotaph, striking the words 'Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika' (Afrikaans for 'We're for you, South Africa').

The Voortrekker Monument is the most visited heritage site of its kind in Gauteng and one of the top ten cultural historical visitor attractions in the country. In addition, the view from the monument’s lookout points is truly spectacular and unquestionably something to experience.

The Voortrekker Monument is located just south of Pretoria in South Africa.
